The Border City Classic was started in 2011 by members of the Canadian Kayak Anglers to help fuel the growth of kayak fishing within Southern Ontario. Since then it has grown to become the largest kayak fishing event in Canada. The 2014 event was the sole Canadian Qualifier for the 2014 Hobie Fishing World Championships in the Netherlands. Kyle Moxon, qualified to represent Canada at the 2014 HFWC by winning the 2014 BCC and went on to place 2nd amongst the 47 Participants from 20 different countries.
Tim Percy and David Lesar qualified from the 2015 BCC where the top Canadian and American participants were selected to participate in the 2015 Hobie Fishing World Championships in China. The BCC draws anglers from around Ontario, and the Midwest who are looking to both compete and meet other anglers who share their passion for this great sport. The BCC is designed to satisfy both the ultra competitive kayak angler as well as the 1st timer and family crowd. We randomly draw for the major donated prizes at the end of the event, along with trophies and awards given to the successful participants placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, largest bass, and a special US vs. Canada Challenge cup stacking up the best 3 fish from both countries. During the event, anglers fish for Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass using the Catch-Photo-Release method and measuring the fish for total length. They may launch from several published launches along the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair on both sides of the border. In 2015 the BCC went live using the iAngler APP where fish are loaded up through either the participants smart phone or uploaded into the app through onsite desktop computers. With the diversity of our competition's divisions, all anglers of varying skill level have a chance at winning in some way. The 2016 BCC now a two day event, June 25th and 26th, will host dinner and awards on both sides of the border. Windsor will be hosted at the Riverside Sportsmen Club,(10835 Riverside Dr E, Windsor, ON N8P1A5) and in Michigan, Dooleys (235 N Groesbeck Hwy Mount Clemens, MI 48043).
